The Tale of Dog Giovanni is the story of friendships between a boy, a dog, and a retired
opera star who lives next door, and lives his life with generous youthful energy. After the older
fellow passes away friendships renew and continue between the boy and the man's dog. This is a
picture-story book created for 3 to 8 year old readers.
This story gathers together many issues concerning friendship, loss and renewal. It uses the elements
of gardening and performing arts to relate ideas which defy easy explanation. Parents and teachers
will find this book a useful tool to help young persons understand some basic events in life. It is
told in a manner which is positive and open to a very personal interpretation. Illustrations and text
combine to tell this tale with humor, charm and wit which will appeal to all audiences.
John Gravdahl is the author and illustrator of this book. He is an Associate Professor in the Department
of Art at Colorado State University where he teaches graphic design and illustration. His work has been
